Magical May Day

Magical May Day in Annapolis

Every first weekend of May, Annapolis transforms into something out of a storybook. The scent of fresh flowers drifts through the brick-lined streets as homes, storefronts, and historic doorways bloom with handmade arrangements, ribbons, and overflowing baskets.

What began in 1956 through the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne has become one of Annapolis’s most cherished traditions — now celebrating over 70 years of welcoming spring through flowers, creativity, and community.

Walking through Maryland Avenue and the surrounding streets this year, I was captivated not only by the arrangements themselves, but by the people behind them. I met a woman who had participated in the tradition for over 40 years — returning each spring to decorate alongside neighbors, local businesses, and generations of families who continue the ritual year after year.

One of my favorite moments happened outside Timber Pizza Company. I had recently met one of the owners and while photographing the displays, I watched him run outside to greet familiar faces walking by. Neighbors stopped mid-conversation, laughter carried down the sidewalk, and he proudly showed off their floral storefront and pizza display with genuine excitement. It captured the spirit of the day perfectly — not just flowers arranged for photographs, but a town opening itself outward.

Each storefront felt entirely different:

some wild and overflowing,

others delicate and restrained,

all reflecting the personality of the people creating them.

There was something beautiful about seeing an entire town slow down to admire flowers — strangers stopping one another on sidewalks, shop owners adjusting ribbons, groups gathering around their favorite displays while quietly hoping to win one of the coveted blue ribbons.

For a day, Annapolis felt suspended in spring itself.

And maybe that’s what makes May Day so special here — it isn’t only about flowers. It’s about people stepping outside, creating something beautiful together, and reminding one another to pause long enough to smell the roses. 🌷
